The Write Stuff - Eva Stachniak
Eva Stachniak is a Polish-Canadian novelist, who came to Canada in 1981 to study at McGill University. She remained here after imposition of martial law prevented her from returning to Poland. After working at Radio Canada for two years, she moved to Toronto to teach at Sheridan College, and her first acclaimed novel Necessary Lies was published in 2000. The library has just acquired her latest novel, The Chosen Maiden. Blending fact with fiction, it tells the story of the Nijinsky siblings, Bronia and Vaslav, and how Bronia fights to be recognised as a ballet dancer in the shadow of her brother, deemed a prodigy. Have Your Say! You did!
A huge thanks to our members who answered our call to attend
a Focus Group and share ideas about what they wanted from our library in the
future. We received many suggestions
about how to attract new members and how to continue to provide a relevant
library experience to our current members.
We are pleased that our members really love the WML — our
building, book selection and courses — and most of all, our members really appreciate
our volunteers who work diligently to keep the library running.
Did you know that the War Memorial Library is maintained and
run solely by volunteers? That’s
right. Currently, our 35 library volunteers
perform an amazing 3,500+ hours of volunteer work per year — and
this does not include the devoted volunteers of the Bunker who raise the money that
keeps the library operating. Because of
the dedication and commitment of all our volunteers, we are able to keep the
WML operating year after year.
We hope to implement many of the suggestions received. However to do this, we need help. We are looking for people with specific skill
sets to help us expand our activities.
Have you ever considered volunteering at the WML?
We are currently looking for people with skills in social
media, communications, graphic design, writing and children’s storytelling. We’re
also looking for a volunteer who can deliver books to shut-ins as well as one
who can teach a program on using Android devices such as mobile phones and
tablets. Or, if you can lead a book club,
or have an idea for an activity you could animate, or would like to talk with
us about what you can do to help,
please email us at Hudson
Librarian.
With more members helping, we will be able to turn some of
the wonderful suggestions we received into realities!

Good Luck June!
This
month we are featuring one of our amazing volunteers, JUNE PEDERSEN. June, a
former nurse, is a long- time Hudson resident and a valuable, hardworking member
of our library staff.
At a
very young 85, June is also an active member of the West Island Dragons, which
is part of a larger organization of Breast Cancer Survivors (BCS) who race
dragon boats. She has been a paddler since 2003.
The BCS
movement started in Vancouver in 1996 when a sports medicine doctor, Don McKenzie,
wanted to prove that upper body exercise might prevent lymphoedema, a swelling
of the arms that sometimes occurs after breast surgery. Of the original 26
women who took part, several are still around to give invaluable aid to
countries that wish to hold the International Racing Festivals. The first was
held in Vancouver in 2005 – 68 teams; Australia in 2007 – 69 teams;
Peterborough, Ontario in 2010 – 69 teams; and Sarasota, Florida in 2014 – 102
teams. June says she has been fortunate enough to have been to all of them.
This
year the competition is in Florence, Italy from July 4th to 8th. There will be more
than 120 teams, each consisting of 22 Survivors in a boat – 20 paddlers, one
steersperson and one drummer. This tournament will have the added challenge of
the heat in July.
June
serves as a wonderful role model to all who are battling any disease and to all
who think of age as just a state of mind!! We at the War Memorial Library wish
June only the very best on this exciting adventure.
