Henning Mankell is the creator of the hugely popular Kurt Wallander series based in Ystad, Sweden. Mankell was born in Stockholm in 1948. In his youth he was a left-wing political activist and a strong opponent of the Vietnam War, apartheid and Portugal's colonial war in Mozambique.
He was invited to be the artistic director of Teatro Avenida in Mozambique and now spends 6 months of the year in that country.
Starting in 2008 BBC produced 9 episodes of Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh. The library has the first six episodes on DVD along with a good selection of Mankell's writings.
